The Odd Couple, Shiraz-Viognier Blends
In 2001 Australia shipped 963 cases of shiraz-viognier to North America, but by 2007 that had increased to 0ver 70,000 cases. As we all know it was the Cote Rotie district of France, where winemakers first blended these somewhat disparate grapes and that blend has been produced for over 500 years. As the two grapes were grown in the same region, and they ripen at the same time, it was quite natural for this blend to happen.
The co-fermentation of these two grapes provides stability and produces a softer, very approachable wine, plus the viognier aromas and flavours complement and lift the shiraz to produce a unique flavour profile. We will have an opportunity to sample the results of this blending with eight wines from the cellar. As a bonus, the evening will be led by John Paul Potters, Sommelier from Toronto’s Spoke Club.
Mark your calendars for The Odd Couple tasting event on Tuesday February 24th at the University of Toronto Faculty Club, this time in the Upper Dining Room, to sample eight especially cellar selected Shiraz Viognier blends.
As usual, we will have some finger foods to accompany the tasting. Since we will be in the upstairs lounge, we are limited to 80 member and guests, so register early.
The Australian Wine Society (AWS) of Toronto is a not-for-profit organization devoted to the enjoyment of the wines of Australia. Through exposure to, and education about the wines and wine regions of Australia, the Society seeks to encourage, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, a greater awareness of the wine varietals, the diversity and the styles of Aussie wines. The opportunity to try a wide range of wines makes it easier for members to decide what types they might want to purchase through wine agents, the LCBO, Vintages monthly releases and the Classics Catalogue.
